PAUL:  After my stroke, I struggled to relearn the basics of taking care of myself with one hand - my left hand  (I was right-handed before).  Here are the tips and tools I use for grooming.

Shaving- Morning Routine

Shaving is difficult with one hand, and cleaning the shaver can be a challenge, too. So I use the electric shaving system, the new Braun Series 7- 790cc Pulsonic Shaver. It gives me a good, close shave, and it cleans itself in a special electronic stand.

Clean Teeth

PAUL:  With aphasia, talking is hard. But everyone understands a smile. And, with a paralyzed right arm, I use my teeth as a second hand sometimes, so they need to be strong.  I do my best to keep my smile healthy, by brushing and flossing everyday, and visiting my dentist three times a year for a professional cleaning and exam.

PAUL:  I use an electric toothbrush to clean my teeth and help my gums.  This brand is similar to the model I use, which is a few years older.Order online Order online

Floss With One Hand

PAUL: I recently found this new flossing system, which is a big improvement over the flossing product I had used in the past.  To floss with one hand, I needed Stephanie to first thread the floss onto a y-shaped handle. With this new system, individual flossing units snap onto the handle, which I learned to do with one hand. Mine is aqua blue.

STEPHANIE:  Before we found this great little product, I would thread four or five flossing handles at a time for Paul, so he would be able to floss each night. The snap-on heads give Paul one more moment of independence, and I gain a few free minutes before bed. Order online
