A new study shows that women experiencing migraine headaches with visual symptoms (known as "auras") seem to be at a higher risk of ischemic stroke. Women between the ages of 15 to 49 who were newly experiencing migraines were found to have a 7 times greater chance of having a stroke than women who did not have migraine headaches. Migraine sufferers who smoked and used oral contraceptives were at the highest risk.
Migraine sufferers should be monitored for stroke risks including high blood pressure, quit smoking and take other measures to lower their risk of stroke, according to the report.
The study was conducted by researchers at the University of Maryland's School of Medicine in Baltimore and was published in the August issue of the Journal "Stroke." For more, visit the AHA Journal's website, click here

========================================= 2. PAUL’S TIPS FOR SURVIVORS: Make Your Vote Count
Recent news stories commemorating the loss on 9/11, or the status of the war in Iraq, or the latest on the Presidential candidates remind me that part of the American way is everyone's ability to be involved in politics.
Maybe your stroke caused you to be paralyzed on one side, or to lose your speech. Maybe you don't work, and can't do volunteer projects. But you can follow politics, learn about the candidates, talk to your friends & family, and VOTE.
If I can do it, you can do it too!
You can follow these easy steps:
1. Read about the presidential candidates and their positions on stroke and disability issues. One helpful non-partisan website is the American Association of People with Disabilities "2008 Presidential Election Action Center", click here.
2. Learn about the candidates at your own pace by visiting their websites, listening to their taped messages, and using a screen reader to help. For a screen reader, click here.
3. Ask your friends about the candidates. It's nice to have something besides stroke to talk about.
Other insights and tips for coping with life and taking control of your recovery after stroke are available on my website at http://www.strokesurvivor.com and in my books, "How to Conquer the World With One Hand...And an Attitude," and "You Can Do It! 105 Thoughts, Feelings & Solutions to Inspire You

4. STEPHANIE'S CAREGIVERS TIPS: SPECIAL National BROADCAST for CAREGIVERS Wednesday, September 19 at 1:00 pm EASTERN time
"Supporting Caregivers Across The Life Span" will be presented as a National Satellite Broadcast September 19, 2007, 1:00 to 3:30 pm, ET, by the federal government's New Freedom Initiative (NFI) Subcommittee on Caregiving, in partnership with the Center for Medicare and Medicaid Services' (CMS) Office of External Affairs.
NFI is a government-wide effort to eliminate the barriers that prevent people with disabilities from participating fully in community life. The Department of Health and Human Services has a range of programs with services and support for the caregivers, providers, and partners who help people with disabilities and older Americans.
The Wednesday broadcast includes a panel of experts who will provide information about HHS programs.
Although this info isn't posted on the CMS website, I found that you can also dial in and listen from your own phone. Dial: 1-888-950-9570; Passcode: Caregivers; Discussion Leader: Spencer Schron.

5. PAUL'S FAVORITES: Cutting Paper with One Hand
Since I can only use one hand, cutting paper can be difficult. I use a small, lightweight, inexpensive paper cutter. It's about the size of a 12-inch ruler, perfect for my desk and fits in a 3-ring binder. It has a guide for precise cuts, a protected sharp blade, and an arm that holds the paper in place.
The model I use is the Personal Paper Trimmer made by Fiskars, available from office and craft supply stores or online from Amazon.com, click here.

7. Stroke/Aphasia Reading problems?
After a stroke, many people have reading and other language problems, known as "aphasia." Hearing a sentence read aloud helps to understand it. You can hear this newsletter read aloud while each word is highlighted on the computer screen with the FREE text reader software.
